Drug and alcohl rehab after-care support

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

An important focus of any respectable treatment center has to be their the follow-up services. Logic dictates that returning to the community requires a strong support system. This includes the sober minded people easily reachable and able to guide the recovering alcoholic and drug addict towards a stable and productive lifestyle, in his/her own community. At Addington House we provide the necessary training and resources needed for you or your loved one to reintegrate back into your family and the work place. Twelve step fellowship programs are an essential part of a quality after-care program. Any center that does not encourage their clients to seek out and participate actively in 12 step groups are not providing the leadership and professional direction needed. Most likely they will advertize excessive success rates and try to discourage people from becoming 12 step members. They will negate 12 step programs with faulty logic. Unfortunately, many people, such as yourself, are desprate and vulnerable to unfair marketing techniques and the promise of success clouds your judgement. We at Addington House make no such claims. Other centers have an agenda, we have a proven program, which includes a minumum two year after-care program. Success is a relative term and impossible to define. To us, a resident, who changes his/her lifestle is a success according to their criteria. That is why a strong support group including the 12 step fellowships is an essential part of after-care programs. Before you choose a center, ask about their after-care services.

Drug alcohol rehab-controlled drinking myth

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

Those “profressionals”, who propose the absurb thought, that an alcoholic can control drinking, are doing their clients a harmful disservice. As one of our residents, at Addington House, put it. “I will drink all your alcohol and then punch you in the mouth”. Alcoholism and drug abuse are serious disorders that respond well to 12 step programs because the causal factors are addressed. Controlled drinking deals only with the symptom and gives the drinker a legit reason to continue. responsible treatment professionals know that abstinence is the only proven method. Twelve step programs combined with the support of AA, and in the case of drug abuse, CA and NA, gives the substance abuser a real opportunity to get the needed help.

Drug and Alcohol Rehab Christmas Party

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

As usual, this years party was a wonderful success. Well over 200 graduates and theor families joined our present day residents in a rousing and entertaining gathering. The graduates provided continuity and hope for the future successes of the present group. Lots of good food and feelings of warmth made for an mind blowing experience. It was also a time to thank the many volunteers, who give the time and provide inspiration. It was also a time for the staff to sit back and reflect on the fantastic job they are doing. It gives us all a chance to see the fruits of our work.

drug rehab and alcohol rehab. why addicts and alcoholics fail treatment

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

Most addicts and alcohols enter rehab programs as either a last resort or because they are forced into it. Last resort types usually have low self esteem and poor prospects for recovery. They present as being sad and depressed. Those forced into treatment are usually angry and resentful. In both cases, the addict and alcohol relent after a short period and actually feel relieved. The lying and deceit has stopped as well as dealing with the low end drug world.

Failure occurs when the substance abuser has difficulty believing in the recovery process. The belief system is a major element of the recovery process. The substance abuser must believe that following the Addington house program will give him/her the successful outcome needed to become and stay sober. They need to transfer this belief system to our after-care follow-up because it requires dedication and perserverence. The failure occurs because the substance abuser does not work the program designed for them.

drug and alcohol rehab-how to deal with denial

Monday, April 30th, 2007

I can stop whenever I want. I am not an addict. These are typical statments made by substance users, who are in denial. Alcoholics and drug addicts tend to deny or minimize their habits. The job of an alcoholic is to drink and the drug addict has to use. They will do and say anything to manipulate the people around them. The people, who want to help, are perceived as interference. The substance abusers use tactics that they have developed to maintain their habits. They can be abusive and menacing. They use emotional blackmail, even threatening suicide. Whatever works. They prey on the fears their loved ones have endured and hope that these strategies will continue to work. They need loved ones to feel guilt . As well, loved ones may feel shame or fear taking action and this is another form of denial. Finally, there is communal denial by various groups, who want to pretend that alcoholism and drug abuse does not touch them.

In time, when loved ones or other people, such as friends and employers, are finally fed up, they will take the next step. This means telling, not asking the substance abuser to get help. Frequently, everyone except the substance abuser, does all the necessary research to find help. The process is long and difficult because their are many possibilities for treatment. The abuser, in many cases, will make excuses to prolong the agony. Usually, the search ends with an ultimatum. Finally, most substance abusers, back down and accept the help, because they become tired of the abuse cycle. Lots of times, they are relieved, and happy, that they don’t have to lie anymore. Tough love may sound harsh but it is effective.

drug and alcohol rehab programs-how to choose

Friday, April 27th, 2007

Choosing a drug and rehab program is one of the most important decisions you can make. You are probably frustrated and anxious. This may cause you to grasp at any centre that boasts of a high success rate. This is a marketing technique meant to give you false hope. At Addington House, we realize that you need to be well informed about the goals of the program, the types of and most importantly, the follow-up services offered.

The menu for drug and alcohol rehab centres is vast. However, you can make your decision based on the following criteria: The centre should be a 12-step facility and not promise any success rate number. As well, the staff should be members  of a recognized accrediting body, such as the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium/Alcohol & Other Drug Abuse.

In Canada, the main certifiying body is the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation and part of the Consortium. Interventionists are professionals, who can steer you in the right direction by matching the addict and/or alcoholic to the appropriate centre.
